Creativity Cheat Codes

You don't need to be creative — you need formulas. Every "wow" build follows these.

The Palette Formula (60·30·10) Pick exactly 4 blocks before placing anything: Base (60% — the boring one: stone brick, planks), Secondary (30% — a texture cousin of the base: cobble next to stone brick), Accent (10% — the pop: a colored terracotta, copper), Roof (its own material, darker than the walls). Every palette card below is just someone's answer to this formula.
Never Flat, Never Pure No wall is one block type — mix the base with 20-30% of its cousins (stone bricks + cracked + cobble) sprinkled randomly. No wall is one PLANE — push window columns 1 block in or out, add pillars at corners, let the roof overhang by 1. Depth reads as detail from any distance.
Shape First, Details Last Build the ugly gray blob first: full outline in cheap blocks, walk around it, fix the silhouette. A good shape with plain walls beats a bad shape with fancy walls every time. Rule of thumb: if the silhouette is a single rectangle, cut a corner out or bump a wing on — L-shapes and T-shapes are instantly 2× more interesting.
Odd Numbers & Frames Widths of 5, 7, 9… give you a center block for doors and peaks. Frame everything: windows get a border material, walls get corner pillars, roofs get trim. The window board and wall designs below are all just frame recipes.
Steal Structure, Swap Palette The honest cheat: copy the SHAPE of a reference build exactly, but swap its palette for one from your cards. Same bones + different skin = original-looking build, zero creative pressure. (Prismarine-roof houses below + cherry palette = a build nobody's seen.)
Gradients Sell Everything Big surfaces (roofs, towers, paths) get a 3-step gradient: darkest at the bottom/edges → lightest at the top/center, blended with random scatter at each boundary. Deepslate → stone → andesite is the classic. Works on the keep's towers.
Land the Building Buildings floating on flat grass look fake. Flare the foundation out 1 block, scatter path blocks to the door, one tree + leaf bushes + lanterns within 5 blocks of the walls. 10 minutes of landscaping upgrades any build more than an hour of wall detail.
Interior Rule of Thirds Rooms: ⅓ furniture, ⅓ open floor, ⅓ wall detail (shelves, paintings, windows). Ceilings are walls too — beams every 3-4 blocks. The furniture grids below are your vocabulary; place along walls first, island pieces last.

🏰 Medieval

Timber, stone, and steep roofs — the wizard's keep family of styles. (Also see Medieval Details in the Core Library.)

Signature Palette

Timber FramingDark oak logs at corners and floor lines, white terracotta or plaster-colored infill between, plank X-bracing on big walls. This one pattern IS the medieval look.
Steep Roofs, Big Overhangs45° stair roofs, 1-block overhang, dormers for attic windows, deepslate or dark oak. Jetty the second floor out 1 block over the first — instant medieval.
Defensive VocabularyArrow-slit windows (1-wide, stair top+bottom), crenellated tower tops (alternating wall gaps), murder holes over gates, banners on the walls.
Ground TruthPaths of mixed cobble/gravel/coarse dirt. Barrels, hay bales, market stalls (wool awnings on fences), lanterns on chains under overhangs.

🏙 Modern

Clean lines, glass, and restraint — the anti-gradient style.

Signature Palette
White ConcreteLight/Gray ConcreteSmooth QuartzGray Stained Glass PanesDark Oak (accent wall)Sea LanternsEnd RodsSmooth Stone Slabs
Stacked BoxesMassing = rectangles offset from each other: cantilever one floor 2-3 blocks past the one below. Flat roofs with a 1-slab overhang lip.
Glass Is a Wall MaterialFloor-to-ceiling glass pane walls on whole faces, framed in dark accent columns. Corner glass (no frame post) reads ultra-modern.
The One Pure StyleNo texture mixing here — flat concrete planes ARE the look. Contrast comes from material changes at box boundaries, not sprinkled variants.
Light & WaterRecessed lighting: sea lanterns under slab lips, end rods as fixtures. A rectangular infinity pool or koi channel beats any garden.

⛩ Oriental / East Asian

Pagoda roofs, paper walls, and gardens built for calm.

Signature Palette
Dark OakCrimson Planks (vermillion)Red & White TerracottaDeepslate Tiles / Dark Prismarine (roof)Cherry Wood (1.20)BambooWhite Wool (paper panels)Stone Lanterns
The Pagoda RoofLayered, flared roofs: each tier overhangs the last, corners kick UP (upside-down stairs at the tips). Deepslate tile or dark prismarine. This roof carries the whole style.
Paper & Frame WallsDark oak log frames with white wool "shoji" panels between; trapdoors as lattice screens. Buildings sit raised on a stone plinth, never on bare grass.
Gates & GardensA torii gate (crimson) frames every approach. Zen garden: gravel "raked" with path-block lines, 2-3 andesite boulders, one cherry tree, a stone lantern.
Cherry MetaThe 1.20 cherry palette (your card #17) + dark roofs is the freshest look in the game — pink reads as blossom season against deepslate.

⚙ Steampunk

Copper, brass, rivets, and visible machinery — the style copper was made for.

Signature Palette
Copper (ALL oxidation stages)Waxed Cut CopperCopper Grates & BulbsBricksDark Oak & SpruceIron Blocks/Bars/TrapdoorsBlackstoneTinted GlassCampfires (smoke)
Copper Is the StarUse the full oxidation gradient deliberately: shiny copper at the top → teal verdigris at the bottom (or reversed). Wax the stages you want frozen. Copper bulbs = period-perfect lamps.
Expose the MachineryGreeble with functional-looking junk: pistons, observers, grindstones, levers, copper grates as vents, iron trapdoors as riveted panels, item-frame + pressure-plate gears.
Pipes & ChimneysRuns of copper blocks/grates along walls as pipework, brick chimneys with campfire smoke, lightning rods as antennae. Everything connects to something.
Brass Domes & AirshipsWaxed cut-copper stair domes on towers; an airship silhouette (wool balloon + dark oak gondola + chain rigging) is the style's signature set piece.

🏡 Cozy Village

Small houses, big roofs, smoking chimneys — the Homestead house style.

Signature Palette
Oak & Spruce mixCobblestone (+mossy) foundationsMud BricksHay (thatch roofs)Dark Oak Stairs (roof)Flower Boxes (trapdoors)Lanterns on FencesGravel + Coarse Dirt paths
Small House, Big RoofFootprints of 7×7 to 9×9, but the roof is ⅔ of the facade — steep, overhanging, with a chimney (always smoking: campfire under a trapdoor).
Window DressingEvery window gets shutters (trapdoors) and a flower box (trapdoor shelf + flowers). This one detail makes any box cozy.
The Space BetweenVillages are made by what is BETWEEN houses: winding gravel/coarse-dirt paths, kitchen gardens, animal pens, a central well or plaza, lanterns on fence posts every 6-8 blocks.
Imperfection Is WarmthVary each house slightly (roof material, one wall material, rotation). Perfectly aligned identical houses read as barracks, not village.
